Their pristine water, locally produced, non-GMO fish feed and a robust cold-chain, results in an affordable, high quality product - transforming the customer experience. In addition, Yalelo have launched several local community programmes supporting health and social development initiatives which, drive the well-being and empowerment of the local community. Yalelo are launching their operations in Uganda, and are currently seeking an Engineering Manager to join their team, based in Jinja.

 

As the new Engineering Manager, you will provide leadership in engineering support and multidisciplinary engineering expertise to the production operations team, striving for continuous productivity and quality improvements / enhancements. You will contribute to the organisation’s success through the creation and implementation of best practice production engineering. Reporting to the Senior Operations Manager, you will manage a team of four Engineers - Planning & Excellence Engineer; Mechanical Engineer; Hatchery Maintenance Engineer; Electrical Engineer. Last but not least, you will be responsible for planning the vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures which aid and improve operational performance.

 

Role Responsibilities:

 

  • Contribute to the creation and implementation of best practice production engineering; planning vision, strategy, policies, processes and procedures to aid and improve operational performance
  • Design, prove, implement and maintain production systems to deliver product on time, to quality requirements and to cost
  • Drive functional excellence of the production engineering team
  • Drive continuous improvement activities in quality, cycle times, process improvement, machine availability through lean techniques and value engineering to enhance the capability of existing processes and remove waste
  • Develop a maintenance and repair schedule that aims to continuously drive down company-wide non-productive time (NPT)
  • Develop and maintain project plans to ensure delivery of milestones to agreed cost targets and timescales
  • Identify and justify capital equipment investment
  • Ensure KPIs are met by working to the overall plan, including management of, and reporting
  • Conduct risk assessments of processes and tasks in the department
  • Develop and maintain strong relationships with internal and external stakeholders to ensure optimal performance
  • Manage and lead the team, ensuring adequate staffing levels and daily supervision to maximise efficient productivity
  • Motivate and coach the team to operational success
  • Monitor the completion of tasks and ensure good performance and record on appropriate systems
  • Ensure that the function operates in accordance with any health, safety and environmental policies and procedures to ensure the safety and well being of staff and visitors
  • Provide technical expertise to the team
  • Production of engineering reports and generation of management insights
  • Work as part of the Management team to share ideas and improve operations: Recommending, supporting and implementing continuous improvement activities and process / procedure improvements, to optimise results and improve quality of delivery in line with quality standards requirements; and delivery in line with company and customer requirements
  • Develop, manage and direct the capital and expense budget for the organisation's engineering operations
  • Contribute to the development of pragmatic processes, policies and procedures

Criteria

  • Bachelor’s degree in Engineering (preferred)
  • Engineering Institute of Uganda member 
  • At least 7 years engineering experience in food or a related industry, which must include two years’ project management and/or supervisory experience
  • Experience of multi-disciplinary team management (i.e. a variety of engineering specialisms - Mech/Elec/Refrig)
  • Proven work experience in a corporate / multinational working environment
  • Advanced knowledge and understanding of engineering principles, methods, and techniques preferably in a food manufacturing/production environment
  • Understanding of principles of capital improvement cost estimation and contract administration
  • Understanding of principles of programs and project development, implementation, management and on-going evaluation
  • Knowledge and understanding of all relevant national laws, regulations, and operating guidelines
  • Computer literate with a working knowledge of the range of MS Office packages and engineering software applications
  • Action and detail oriented, having a drive for success
  • Analytical and problem solving skills
  • Strong management and leadership skills together with excellent communication, influencing, negotiating and presentation skills
  • The ability to network and interact effectively with a broad range of associates spanning varied disciplines and responsibilities
  • Service-focused approach, vested in product and process excellence and customer satisfaction.
