In addition, Yalelo have launched several local community programmes supporting health and social development initiatives, which drive the well-being and empowerment of the local community. Yalelo launched their Uganda operations in 2019, and are seeking a Health & Safety professional to support their organisation and Production operations.

 

As the new Health & Safety Officer, you will ensure company compliance with legislative obligations and drive the continuous improvement of a strong Health and Safety culture throughout the business. You will facilitate the ongoing development of Health and Safety policies and practices to make sure all staff adhere to these standards. You will also provide advice, support and guidance on all matters of legal compliance regarding Health and Safety Management.

 

 

Role Responsibilities:

  • Develops principles and targets of safety management, responsible for establishment, implementation, review and improvement of the safety management system including quality assurance systems and compliance with internal and external audits
  • Establishes incident command system and emergency response plan in close collaboration with the Production Operations Team and the Security Teams
  • Creates a rigorous reporting mechanism to track safety hazards and health risks over time, suggesting control and corrective measures to relevant teams
  • Regularly plans and organises health and safety training and activities to build up safety skills and promote, establish and nurture safety culture
  • Develops practices and procedures to assess risk and adherence to the law
  • Monitors compliance to policies and laws, safety practices and procedures by regularly inspecting employees and operations, inspect equipment and machinery to observe possible unsafe conditions
  • Investigates accidents and incidents to establish cause, and take prevention measures for further incidents and handle worker's compensation claims in the event of a workplace accident. Familiar with the use of Root Cause Analysis
  • Suggests solutions, improvements and prevention steps for safety issues, promoting a positive health and safety culture throughout the organisation
  • Drafts, implements and maintains policies and guidelines on Health and Safety ensuring compliance with legislation and incorporate any updates in national and international laws into the health and safety policy
  • Develops, implements, administers, and maintains H&S protocol around the use of PPEs and adherence to safety and health related programs
  • Formulates corporate short term and long term H&S objectives and plans
  • Maintains contacts with external parties regarding Health and Safety, including government institutions
  • Provides advice on Health and safety to line departments


 

Criteria

  • Bachelor of Science or Engineering related discipline
  • At least 5 years of experience preferably in heavy industry, extractives/natural resources, manufacturing or FMCG
  • Extensive knowledge of QHSE system establishment, implementation and reviewing
  • Certified in risk management and health/safety management by national and/or international accredited agency/governing body
  • Thorough knowledge of health and safety laws and guidelines both national, regional and international
  • Meticulous attention to detail to distinguish safety hazards
  • Ability to generate regular, detailed and analytical reports and develop safety procedures
  • Strong understanding of data analysis and risk assessment
  • Strong organisational, leadership and motivational skills
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills
  • Ability to recognise when safety conditions need improvement
  • Ability to prioritise tasks especially when handling an accident or incident
  • Natural multi-tasker
