Sendwave - Fintech Product Manager Movemeback African opportunity cover image

Description

Wave is a VC backed startup with a mission to make sending money to Africa as easy and affordable as sending a text. In 2017, one billion immigrants worldwide sent over $600 billion home to family and friends, dwarfing foreign governmental aid. In the age of cheap, quick transfers and mobile money people are still trekking to stores to pay fees averaging over 7% for transfers that typically take 24 hours or more to arrive. Co-founded by two Brown and Harvard engineering graduates, Wave was launched in 2014, after one of its founders became tired of having to make a physical trip to a store AND pay an additional 10%, to send money to the NGO he was running in Tanzania. The two devised and built an app which allows users to send money instantly from a smartphone to the recipient’s mobile money account in Kenya. Five years on, Wave is now available in 5 countries, with plans to expand throughout Africa. In 2016, Wave also broadened their scope and began building a mobile money product for domestic markets in Africa, to cater for the 60% of unbanked adults within Sub-Saharan Africa. Launched in Fall 2017, the team are now processing over 200k payments every month. Wave has ambitious plans to make Africa the first cashless continent, starting with Senegal and followed by rapid expansions plans throughout Africa in the coming year. Wave are looking for a Product Manager with prior tech experience and a passion for their mission, to join their team.

As the new Product Manager, you will own a product or feature, and play a key role in the end-to-end process of utilising deep user understanding and data to develop and build this out. In addition, you will manage a small agile team effectively to ensure the quick delivery of these improvements and new launches into user's hands, whilst simultaneously widening Wave's reach. Wave’s products and features address real problems, and this is where you will come in:

The problem:

In 2017, nearly 60% of adults in sub-Saharan Africa had no bank account. That's for good reason—the fees are too high, the closest branch can be miles away, and nobody takes cards. Without access to financial institutions, people are forced to keep their savings under the mattress. Small business owners rely on lenders who charge extortionate rates. Parents spend hours waiting in line to pay school fees in cash.

How Wave is solving this:

By  building financial services to work as they should: no account fees, instantly available and accepted everywhere. In places where electricity, water and roads don't always function, Wave are creating financial infrastructure that "just works." In fall 2017, they launched a mobile app in Senegal for cash deposit, withdrawal, and peer-to-peer and business payments; they are now processing over 200k payments every month. Their goal is to make Africa the first cashless continent.

Over to you…..

Role Responsibilities:

  • Own a product or feature, figuring out what to build and managing the team
  • Gather feedback (by talking to users and looking at data) to deeply understand the problem space and users' needs
  • Work from first principles to understand the user's biggest problems and then figure out how the product should work to solve those problems
  • Prioritise the biggest problems blocking the product's growth and impact
  • Manage a small agile team to get the improvements into users' hands in rapid iteration cycles, gather more feedback and reach more people
  • Own your product's development from start to finish, iterating and failing quickly to build what just works

Criteria

As the ideal candidate:

  • You have previously worked as a product manager at a tech company
  • You have strong analytical skills and ask good questions
  • You are adaptable and can change your strategy quickly based on new information
  • You are excited about working with Wave's users to make a positive difference in their lives
  • You are willing to spend at least 75% of your time in Senegal

Benefits

  • Salary, plus equity
  • Subsidised health insurance for you and your dependants and retirement contributions (both vary from country-to-country)
  • 26 weeks fully paid parental leave and subsidised fertility assistance
  • Unlimited vacation with a 20-day minimum requirement
  • Wave will cover all costs associated with travel to and from Senegal
  • $10,000 annual charitable donation matching
  • A great opportunity to work with and influence the success of a deeply passionate team in a growing VC-backed start up
