Sokowatch aims to provide ​everything a retailer needs, no wholesalers or banks necessary​. Thousands of retailers across Kenya, Tanzania, Rwanda, and Uganda use Sokowatch's mobile ordering and delivery platform to receive the goods they need as quickly and cheaply as possible while also accessing growth financing for the first time. The Global Head of Finance will be responsible for all aspects of finance operations management for Sokowatch, including corporate accounting, regulatory and financial reporting, treasury activities, tax compliance, and transfer pricing policies across multinational operations while also developing internal controls for operational risk mitigation. The ideal candidate will possess strong analytical abilities, exceptional problem-solving skills, a flair for numbers, highly organized processes, and excellent leadership experience. This leader will be responsible for streamlining Sokowatch's accounting functions and operations, training reporting staff on business finance processes, promoting regulatory compliance, and achieving the company’s financial targets. As a key member of the Senior Leadership team, the Global Head of Finance will report directly to the Global CEO and assume an essential role in the overall management of the company.

 

Locations​:

Initial onboarding will take place in Nairobi, though the role can eventually be based in any of Sokowatch's current markets below with travel expected at least 30% of the time:

  • Kenya (Nairobi)
  • Tanzania (Dar es Salaam)
  • Rwanda (Kigali)
  • Uganda (Kampala)

 

Duties & Responsibilities:

  • Leading the operational finance team to produce timely and accurate reporting data across all markets
  • Managing all treasury functions, including capital allocation across markets and foreign exchange risks
  • Ensuring compliance with regulations across all markets
  • Establishing and overseeing daily accounting operations across all markets while monitoring expenditures
  • Leading audit processes for direct reporting to the Board of Directors
  • Participating in key decisions as a member of the senior leadership team
  • Supervising of internal procedures and controls for major expenses, including payments to suppliers, payroll, travel, etc
  • Overseeing monthly, quarterly, and yearly close processes
  • Managing and complying with local and national government reporting requirements and tax filings
  • Developing and documenting business processes and accounting policies to maintain and strengthen internal controls
  • Providing in-depth guidance and training on the theory and application of International Financial Reporting Standards

 

Criteria

Requirements​:

The successful candidate will possess:

  • 5+ years' experience. Prior experience in controller and accounting roles is required
  • Experience in an organization with large amounts of inventory requirements, e.g. FMCG, manufacturing, retail etc
  • Multi-country finance experience (managing multi-country / remote teams in Africa and collaborating across departments is preferred)
  • Experience with implementation of an ERP system added bonus
  • High level of integrity and dependability with a strong sense of urgency and results orientation
  • Creative problem-solving abilities with detail-oriented mindset
  • Strong interpersonal skills, an incredible work ethic, and low ego
  • Hands-on management abilities with a desire to work in a dynamic, fast paced, startup environment
