Description

The Rising Academy Network's (RAN) mission is to create schools that open doors and change lives. Founded in Sierra Leone in 2014, RAN provided emergency education to children kept out of school by the Ebola Epidemic before opening their first school in April 2015.  They are one of the fastest-growing quality-focused education companies in Africa, and a Certified B Corp®.  RAN are committed to the highest standards of rigour and transparency when it comes to measuring their impact and learning how they can improve. As their school creed says: "however well we do, we always strive to do better." RAN use their own high quality curriculum, intensive teacher coaching and rapid feedback loops to bring quality to every classroom.  A study by Oxford University found that RAN’s girls make 2-4x the progress of their peers in other schools. Before COVID, RAN were serving 50,000 students across 170 schools. Since the crisis began, they’ve repositioned their whole organisation behind their distance learning solution, Rising On Air. They’re currently partnering with 30 organisations across 18 countries to keep students safe and learning via radio and SMS. But that’s just the start. Their medium-term goal is to get One Million Learning by the end of the decade, and they are looking for an accomplished leader to build the Finance operations to drive achievement of this goal.

As the new Finance Director, your mission is to build the world-class, multi-country finance and accounting function the team need to underpin their scale-up. Reporting to the CEO, the Finance Director will join RAN’s Senior Management Team and work closely with these leaders to build a culture of excellence in every aspect of their financial management. As the ideal candidate, you will be both a great doer, great engineer and system-builder.

  • Reporting to the board and investors on financial matters;
  • Corporate finance, including owning the corporate financial model and supporting the CEO with fundraising and investor relations;
  • Optimizing the finance function to produce better, more relevant and more timely information for management;

About Rising Academy Network

Rising Academies is a growing network of inspiring schools in West Africa. Our mission is to create schools that open doors and change lives. Across the developing world, more children than ever are in school, but they are not learning. In Sierra Leone and Liberia, research shows that even among young women who have completed primary school, more than 90% are unable to read a simple sentence. We want to change that.

Through great curriculum, intensive teacher coaching and actionable data, we help teachers and school leaders bring quality to every classroom. We innovate through low-cost private schools we own and operate ourselves, then take these learnings and work with governments and other partners to improve the quality of their schools at scale. Our students develop excellent literacy, numeracy and spoken English as the foundation for success in further study, work and day-to-day life. Independent evaluations have found that Rising students make 2 to 3 times as much progress in reading and maths in one year as their peers in other schools.

We’re one of the fastest-growing quality-focused education companies in Africa, and a Certified B Corp®. Founded in Sierra Leone in 2014, we provided emergency education to children kept out of school by the Ebola Epidemic before opening our first school in April 2015. Today, we serve more than 40,000 students across more than 140 schools in Sierra Leone and Liberia.
