Description

Who We Are:

We’re on a mission to build a bank Africans love to use. We are always keen to hear from capable, ambitious, and creative people who want to help us accomplish that goal. Our first product was a mobile money service in East Africa, which gained over 250,000 customers. Now we’ve set our sights on making an impact on a global scale! We’re currently launching an international money transfer service for Africans living overseas, who send money home to their loved ones.  We’re backed by: Y Combinator, Accel Partners (their first African Investment!), DST Global, DFS Lab, NYCA Partners, and several incredible fintech angel investors.

The Opportunity & Who We Are Looking For:

We believe the best B2C companies in the next 5-10 years will have amazingly engaged ambassadors and word of mouth champions. You’ll play an integral role in growing a global community of customers proud to use our services.

We are looking for someone who has experience building communities, who can empathize with the African diaspora, and is passionate about driving significant economic growth on the continent through payments.

You are a lover of fintech, a quick learner, a strong problem solver, and someone who is not afraid to step out of his or her comfort zone. You’ll be comfortable with lots of responsibility from day one - every week is different but you can expect to spend time:

  • Planning and producing events
  • Carving out and executing new engagement strategies
  • Identifying opportunities for collaboration with the diaspora leaders in the UK
  • Turning user feedback into practical insights
  • Writing copy for our website and app

As the ideal candidate, you will have had experience working in a fast-moving startup environment, and should be excited about building a community for the African diaspora.

What We Are Currently Building:

We want to build a bank for the African diaspora globally, initially by starting with remittances of diaspora sending money home. We believe this is critical to solve to channel economic value back to the African continent.  We believe using remittances is one of the best forms of true economic development and we would like to use it as an entry point before building new layers of financial services for the African diaspora.

As a starting point we are excited about:

  • Building Remittances 2.0 - we know remittance fees are a race to the bottom and believe the current model has some things that need to be changed
  • Enabling credit - for senders sending money back to Africa so they don’t have to wait till they get their paycheck at the end of the month
  • Enabling direct bill pay - so the diaspora can pay for bills (TV, Electricity etc..) directly for their family every month
  • Building a community of African diaspora helping us build an incredible product together

A Few Of The Challenges That Make This Role Exciting:

  • We are building a product for every African abroad (starting in the UK). Our customers have varying backgrounds, degrees of tech-savviness, financial literacy, and use a wide variety of mobile devices
  • There are giants who play in the general remittances to Africa space, including the likes of World Remit, Sendwave, TapTapSend; none of them have a strong community network for the African

Nala's Current Assets & Presence:

  • A beta waitlist of a few hundred East Africans
  • An events mailing list of 500+ previous attendees
  • A mainly East African based social media following - Twitter (~2.5K) Instagram (14.8k)
  • A Slack community of over 60 African founders and entrepreneurs
  • Good relationships with 10-15  trusted community leaders and diaspora groups in the UK

Criteria

  • You have at least 3+ years of experience building community at scale for a consumer-facing product
  • You have excellent knowledge of the best practices in cultivating an audience online and offline
  • You hold interest in Africa, financial services, payments, and wallets
  • You have experience with managing social media channels and curating content
