Description

IDinsight helps global leaders combat poverty by designing, deploying and promoting evidence-generating tools. With operations in nearly two dozen countries, IDinsight works with Governments, non-governmental organisations, foundations, and social businesses across Africa and Asia, to translate data into actionable insights. They provide rigorous evidence, helping clients better understand how to use data to inform decisions and improve social sector programs across health, education, agriculture, sanitation, finance, energy and governance. IDinsight is on track to improve millions of lives by transforming the way the global social sector innovates, learns and improves, utilising the following approaches:

 

  • Embedded partnerships: Long-term, embedded engagements with multiple governments and donors to fuse evidence generation with policy action in the health, education, sanitation, nutrition and social protection sectors;
  • Decision-focused impact evaluation: Impact evaluations with multiple agribusinesses to improve smallholder farmer income and nutrition;
  • Outcomes-based financing: Advancing the pay-for-results frontier via Africa’s first development impact bond in Uganda and Kenya;
  • Mixed-methods support: For example, the team shaped an NGO’s education intervention in Uganda and Ghana by conducting semi-structured interviews, classroom observations, and teacher surveys.

IDinsight's West Africa operations are led by teams based in Accra, Ghana and Dakar, Senegal. The West Africa team has grown rapidly in recent years and West Africa is pivotal to IDinsight’s global strategy. IDinsight’s West Africa team is seeking an exceptional, entrepreneurial leader to manage its Ghana office and drive socially impactful, evidence-driven projects in the region. 

 

As the new Associate Director, Ghana, you will drive the Accra office's growth and strategy; lead IDinsight’s flagship partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation - Office of the President; whilst developing and overseeing a portfolio of other client engagements in Ghana and West Africa. You will assume critical responsibility for driving large pieces of IDinsight’s work and strategy in West Africa with support from IDinsight’s Africa Director team and CEO. You will be given the autonomy to develop an independent portfolio of projects, as you become more experienced and develop an understanding of the organisation’s portfolio selection strategy. In addition, you may be expected to manage three to five IDinsight Managers and their respective teams totalling 12-15 people, from Day One and as they grow over time. You will also oversee the local operations team including an Administrative Assistant, and be supported by IDinsight’s African Operations team, and Global Operations, Legal and Finance teams.

 

 

Role Responsibilities:

 

  • Leading the Accra office and contributing to IDinsight strategy in West Africa (30%):
    Lead the dynamic Accra office, including representing IDinsight to senior stakeholders, establishing a strong team culture in a multi-lingual, multi-cultural environment, and liaising with the legal, global finance and global operations teams.  Contribute to staff recruitment and onboarding, ensure regulatory compliance, and work with IDinsight’s Africa and Global Leadership teams to craft, refine and execute IDinsight’s West Africa Strategy.
     
  • Overseeing a portfolio of client engagements (50%):
    Oversee a number of client engagements in Ghana and West Africa. This includes IDinsight's long-term, embedded partnership with Ghana’s Ministry of Monitoring and Evaluation - Office of the President, through which they have supported many of Ghana’s highest priority initiatives including the President’s Free Senior High School initiative. Other partners in the region include the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation, Givewell, the Global Innovation Fund, the Hewlett Foundation, Tostan, Zipline, and many others. The individual will be a thought leader in setting a strategic agenda for their portfolio; drive projects toward achieving social impact; mentor and support IDinsight’s high-performing staff; and oversee all project-related safety & security risk management.  
     
  • Supporting client development efforts in the region (20%):
    Meaningful relationships with clients represent the foundation of IDinsight’s model. The ideal individual will establish her / himself as an expert and trusted advisor to development leaders to increase program effectiveness and shape evidence-based action in the region.  S/he will help design and develop new client engagements in which the data and evidence IDinsight generate is used to improve the social impact of clients’ programs.

Criteria

  • Advanced degree (Master’s or Doctoral) in public policy / public administration, economics, engineering, business, or public health. Quantitative backgrounds preferred but not a strict requirement
  • Demonstrable experience of 8 years (minimum) in international development, including extensive managerial experience in a developing country (ideally in Ghana); experience running an office, a large program or a business unit a plus
  • Deeply passionate about international development and social impact and strongly aligned with IDinsight’s values, vision and mission
  • Relevant experience using evidence to improve social impact - fluency in impact evaluation and latest evidence tools a plus but not a requirement, experience working with or inside government a plus
  • Demonstrable evidence of operating and executing with high quality outputs in rapid growth, fast paced environments, 
  • Multiple years living and working in Ghana is a plus
  • Proven ability to be an inspiring leader to exceptional cohorts of young professionals, in a dynamic and highly diverse multicultural environment
  • Thrives in entrepreneurial setting, and able to adapt to dynamic growth and change
  • Lifelong learner with keen intellectual curiosity and sense of humour, outstanding interpersonal skills and client management experience
  • Willingness to travel as needed and work with colleagues based remotely
  • The Ghana office has strict nationality requirements - Ghanaian nationals or candidates with prior rights to live and work in Ghana are preferred
  • Two-year commitment required.  Start date is flexible, with preference for the Q2 of 2020

The team launched new embedded learning partnerships with governments across Asia and Africa and strengthened existing ones with the Governments of Ghana, India, Malawi, and Zambia. In addition to conducting rigorous “decision-focused” impact evaluations for leaders, ID insight launched innovative data and evidence tools to help their partner organisations solve some of the world’s most pressing challenges, and also expanded into new geographies. 

 

The team are growing fast and IDinsight have expanded their global presence, opening four new offices in Bangalore, Dakar, Johannesburg, and Washington, DC, and placed new embedded teams in Lilongwe and Accra in 2018.
