Description

Hugo is a Future-of-Work company. It is building Africa’s first remote-work, business process outsourcing (BPO) company - which assembles and manages high-performance remote support and data operations teams for some of the world’s largest technology and media companies. Hugo is dedicated to carving out a place in the digital (i.e. the future) economy for young Africans and black communities; and works tirelessly to equip them with the skills necessary to build meaningful careers in this global economy. People are Hugo’s greatest assets - their expanding curated employee base of 1200 tech-savvy university graduates are rigorously trained by world-class professionals at their Academy, to ensure the best outcomes for their global clientele.

Founded by two Harvard Business School alumni, Hugo is a company that is obsessed with both excellence and transformation; transformation, not just of its people, but also of the narratives that have taken hold about what Black/African communities bring to the world. Hugo aspires to be a global reference point - a living attestation that great things and global corporations can be born, operated and exported out of Africa.

Hugo is committed to building this future and is seeking a Chief of Staff to help scale the company, position it as one of Africa’s most impactful ventures, and build a cohesive organisation that is committed to overcoming the challenges of building something great out of the Continent. Your first challenge as Chief of Staff will be to transform how Hugo attracts, hires and retains world class talent.

Working closely with, and reporting directly to Hugo’s CEO, your immediate role will be to build scalable processes and systems to grow and nurture Hugo’s most valued assets - its people. As a member of both the Management Committee and Hiring Committee, you will be responsible for Hugo’s strategic positioning as an employer of choice on the Continent, creating processes to deliver key hires, leading initiatives to build culture, and retain great talent, and ensuring that key hires are successfully integrated into a globally distributed organisation. Hugo’s ideal Chief of Staff is process-driven, strategic, and a proven tactical executor, interested in growing and developing within the organisation.

Role Responsibilities:

1. Establish Hugo as an employer of choice:
You will think strategically and holistically about how to position, market and orient Hugo to continue to attract and engage amazing talent. In doing so, you will ensure that Hugo keeps a steady stream of world-class operators coming through its doors. If you are successful, you will have positioned Hugo as one of the most desirable employers-of-choice for the world’s “Africa-interested”, and built a mechanism for managing and engaging this talent pipeline.

2. Develop a robust, scalable talent recruiting operation:
As a talent systems builder, you will establish processes that enable Hugo to make key hires and onboards talent at all levels, at scale. This might involve establishing a recruiting software/tool stack, designing KPIs and implementing application tracking systems. You will create a best-in-class, end-to-end experience for candidates that maintains Hugo’s employer brand position, and ensures new hires start with the best possible first impression of the organisation. If you are successful, Hugo will be able to hire and onboard new team members at scale, without friction, or your active participation.

3. Develop and lead initiatives to create a strong organisational culture:
You will think creatively yet pragmatically about how to maintain an organisation with a great culture - one that is close but connected by a collective commitment to excellence, being the best (deep competence), overcoming large/complex challenges, and ultimately building something that will have a lasting impact. If you are successful, you would have created a healthy balance between a high-performance culture and employee wellbeing, happiness and resting-tenure.

4. Hire an effective management team:
You will work closely with the founders to think strategically about the organisation’s talent requirements. This will involve identifying high impact recruiting needs, developing hiring plans (job description, candidate profile/persona, talent acquisition strategy) and assessment techniques, and ensuring hires are successfully onboarded to equip them to be successful in their roles. If you are successful, you would have hired and onboarded at least 5 professionals into Hugo’s management team.

Criteria

Requirements for the role:

  • Experience working in a high performing environment;
  • Experience building processes and systems to support organisational growth;
  • Experience designing well-considered strategy (strategic), as well as successfully delivering projects (tactical);
  • A track record of using research, data, insights and best practices to support proposals;
  • An eye, feel and disposition for great networks of talented individuals, who may be/become relevant to Hugo now or in the future;
  • Experience selling / marketing something new, novel, or ‘off the beaten path’.

To succeed you should also be / have:

  • Rigorous and analytical;
  • Effective communication and strong interpersonal skills;
  • Entrepreneurial, curious and iterative, willing to be experimental by trying and testing new ideas;
  • Strong, proven bias-to-action (not bias-to-overthinking);
  • Resilience (solving big problems takes time, will lots of failure en route to the answer);
  • Authentic and trustworthy in your approach and communications - not “salesy” or transactional.

Ideally you will also have the following experience:

  • Recruiting and organisational building at the highest levels;
  • Scaling an organisation in Africa;
  • Building a cohesive, high-performance culture.

About you - You are likely to thrive and enjoy working at Hugo if you:

About Hugo

Hugo is a Future-of-Work Co. It is building Africa’s first, remote-work, business process outsourcing (BPO) company - which assembles and manages high-performance remote support and data operations teams for some of the world’s largest technology and media companies.

Headquartered in Chicago, with an active workforce of 1200+ remote operators strategically distributed across Lagos, Nairobi, Dakar, and Cape Verde, Hugo delivers a nuanced approach to customer support (omnichannel), eComm. marketplace operations, sales enablement, and AI data operations (our work reduces bias in AI + machine learning models). Their clients are global leaders in tech and media, ranging from the likes of Google and Meta, to Upwork and Red Table Talk.

Over the last 30 years, the BPO industry has consistently generated ~ US$430 billion worth of income and employment opportunities, globally, but with fewer than 2% of these opportunities reaching global black communities (S.E. Asia being the largest beneficiary). By contrast, 12 million African youths enter the workforce annually, to an underwhelming 3 million jobs created. Hugo exists to change this. By leveraging the global BPO industry’s scale, it is building a job-creation-engine-of-scale capable of generating 000s of jobs for African, and then black communities worldwide.
