Genser Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) based in the USA with operations in West Africa, which specialises in providing custom engineered turn-key distributed generation energy solutions for clients in the mining, manufacturing, and utilities industries. Their mission is to develop sustainable energy solutions despite the infrastructural constraints in Africa, whilst utilising the appropriate technologies in a safe, efficient & reliable manner, with a focus on the training and development of local expertise. Genser engages in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), alongside the operation and maintenance (O&M) of its power generation plants and sells electricity and/or steam to its clients. Each project is financed and owned by a country-level subsidiary in Africa. Over the last eleven years, the team has completed and commissioned five distributed generation plants in Ghana and developed their own fuel supply chain for the smooth running and operation of the various thermal plants. Genser’s unique approach in delivering energy solutions, emphasises the team’s ability to expressly design, maintain and efficiently operate generation facilities tailored to their clients' needs and requirements. Genser is committed to providing sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions to numerous sectors across Africa; and is exploring projects in Gabon and Mauritania. Genser is seeking a strong and entrepreneurial leader to join their Executive team.

 


As the new VP of Finance, your primary focus will be leading Genser Energy in their fund raising efforts, as well as the management of financial reports and capital expenditures, to ensure the delivery of all project objectives in accordance with all budgets and timelines. As the ideal candidate, you possess strong analytical skills, the ability to work in a self-directed fashion within a team oriented structure, strong work ethic, and professional maturity. You demonstrate strong leadership qualities and experience, as well as the ability to operate effectively in an entrepreneurial environment.

 

 

Role Responsibilities:

 

Financial Management

  • Evaluate and advise on the impact of long-range planning, introduction of new programs or strategies and regulatory action.
  • Manage processes for financial forecasting, budgets and consolidation and reporting to the company.
  • Provide recommendations to strategically enhance financial performance and business opportunities.
  • Supervise the finance team to achieve top tier standards of operations, business controls, reporting excellence and flawless project execution.
  • Provide timely and accurate analysis of budgets, financial trends and forecasts.
  • Help raise debt capital from international markets including foreign banks and financial institutions
  • Analyze trends, costs, revenues, financial commitments, and obligations incurred to predict future revenues and expenses.
  • Report organization's finances to management, and offer suggestions about resource utilization, tax strategies, and assumptions underlying budget forecasts.
     

Engineering, Procurement and Construction

  • Ensure compliance to all Health, Safety and Environmental regulations as well as Engineering, Finance & Corporate rules and standards
  • Develop monthly Project Update Reports for the Managing Director & the Board
  • Report variances and deviations from budget to the Management and alternative strategies for adjustment
  • Support the Project Manager in reviewing all vendor & supplier contracts, purchase orders and service agreements to remain in alignment with the budget

 

Operations & Maintenance

  • Ensure compliance to the operational budget and inform the Managing Director and the Board if the budget increases beyond 10%

 

Business Development

  • Assist the Senior Management and the Business Development Team in designing the appropriate financial models and risk management metrics for new business ventures

 

Organizational Development 

  • Support the Organizational Development Manager (ODM) to develop and implement training programs for the Finance Department
  • Participate in the recruitment processes and assist with the development of compensation plans and benefit programs along with Financial Management Policies and Procedures

 

Legal & Compliance

  • Ensure that there is an effective internal control system and guarantee compliance with relevant regulatory bodies and applicable local regulatory laws and rules for financial and tax reporting

Criteria

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in Finance or Economics; Chartered Accountant, MBA, or Equivalent preferred
  • 12 years post-qualification experience in relevant field; Power sector experience in Africa or other emerging markets preferred
  • Deep understanding of project finance and capital raising as well as financial accounting and reporting
  • Excellent written and oral communication skills and ability to work alongside colleagues at all levels

In addition to ownership of these distributed generation plants, Genser Energy Ghana has also developed their own fuel supply chain for the smooth running and operation of the various thermal plants. Genser Energy Ghana, currently owns two assets to facilitate the supply and storage of fuel for its generation plants, namely; the GP Tarkoradi Terminal and the GP Kojokrom (Eshiem) Facility. Genser’s current operations in Ghana reflect their firm commitment to increasing the generation capacity of the country.
