Genser Energy is an Independent Power Producer (IPP) based in the USA with operations in West Africa, which specialises in providing custom engineered turn-key distributed generation energy solutions for clients in the mining, manufacturing, and utilities industries. Their mission is to develop sustainable energy solutions despite the infrastructural constraints in Africa, whilst utilising the appropriate technologies in a safe, efficient & reliable manner, with a focus on the training and development of local expertise.

 

Genser engages in engineering, procurement and construction (EPC), alongside the operation and maintenance (O&M) of its power generation plants and sells electricity and/or steam to its clients. Each project is financed and owned by a country-level subsidiary in Africa. Over the last eleven years, the team has completed and commissioned five distributed generation plants in Ghana and developed their own fuel supply chain for the smooth running and operation of the various thermal plants. Genser’s unique approach in delivering energy solutions, emphasises the team’s ability to expressly design, maintain and efficiently operate generation facilities tailored to their clients' needs and requirements. Genser is committed to providing sustainable and cost-effective energy solutions to numerous sectors across Africa; and is exploring projects in Gabon and Mauritania.

 

Genser is seeking a motivated and commiteted Sustainability Manager to drive corporate social responsibility and mitigate environmental impact. 

 

Role Responsibilities

  •  Develop and implement the company-wide environmental management and corporate social responsibility strategy
  • Manage compliance with Lenders’ environmental requirements including compliance with Equator Principles, IFC Performance Standards and Environmental and Social Action Plans
  • Manage the environmental management system, certification, and adherence to the ISO 14000 standards
  • Oversee the organization’s management and policy adherence in relation to pollution control, environmental health, carbon foot printing, biodiversity, responsible procurement, waste management and recycling
  • Lead on environmental investigations for significant incidents
  • Prepare environmental permits, licenses, and waste exemptions
  • Develop and drive corporate social investment projects within the organization
  • Drive and implement the strategy around community, government, and regulatory relations
  • Drive internal and external stakeholder engagement to ensure overall compliance to environmental and social performance legislation for both O&M and EPC 
  • Keep abreast of laws and regulations that can affect organizational policies and procedures and put measures in place to ensure business continuity and alignment to sustainable development protocols
  • Represent the organization in consultations with relation to environmental and social matters

Criteria

  • A bachelor’s degree in environmental sciences/ development studies
  • A Master’s degree is highly desirable
  • Over 8 years’ experience in leading environmental management and corporate social investment, ideally within Oil/Gas/Energy oriented organizations
  • Solid knowledge and experience in implementation of environmental and social regulations and standards including the Equator Principles and IFC (World Bank) regulations
  • Solid knowledge and experience in driving ISO 14000 compliance in organizations
  • Impeccable stakeholder engagement and experience liaising with Government, Communities, and Regulatory authorities
  • Experience in Project Management, Impact Assessment, and Impact Reporting
  • Experience working internationally and/or regionally
  • Membership of an appropriate association is desirable including the worldwide alliance of environment and sustainability professionals (IEMA)
  • Proficiency in French language would be an added advantage

Over the last eleven years, Genser Energy Holdings Inc., through its subsidiary, Genser Energy Ghana Limited, has completed and commissioned five distributed generation plants in Ghana, with a total output of 132MW - four of which are owned, operated and maintained by Genser. In addition to ownership of these distributed generation plants, Genser Energy Ghana has also developed their own fuel supply chain for the smooth running and operation of the various thermal plants. Genser Energy Ghana, currently owns two assets to facilitate the supply and storage of fuel for its generation plants, namely; the GP Tarkoradi Terminal and the GP Kojokrom (Eshiem) Facility. Genser’s current operations in Ghana reflect their firm commitment to increasing the generation capacity of the country.
