Fresh Life is Sanergy group's sanitation innovation company. Operational since 2011, the Sanergy group serves over 140,000 urban residents with safe sanitation services every day. Sanergy collects and treats over 12,000T of waste per year, and successfully sells its agricultural end-products to farmers in over 20 counties in Kenya, who see improved yields and increased incomes. Sanergy group undertakes three exciting lines of work of which Fresh Life is one.
Sanergy provide safe, sustainable sanitation services to residents living in urban informal settlements of Nairobi and Kisumu using end-to-end non-sewered sanitation solutions through their Fresh Life entity. Fresh Life partners with cities to develop and deliver safe sanitation and waste management for urban residents. Using a systematic methodology, they match cities’ sanitation and waste management needs with technology and service delivery models, and then offer clear guidance on the steps that governments, funders, service providers and technology developers can take to develop and implement integrated service delivery systems.
Sanergy's franchise network of clean, containerised toilets and non-sewered sanitation solutions serve all urban residents and are five times cheaper than sewers. The community is engaged with running the ‘Fresh Life Toilets’ as local micro-entrepreneurs at every step, with waste separated to make organic fertiliser, instead of polluting waterways. The success stories of the Fresh Life 'operators', from being able to afford an education to expanding franchises, are spurring on the ‘digital toilet’ model to be replicated within other urban slums.
There are currently over 3,000 active Fresh Life Toilets in informal settlements, with over 100,000 daily uses from community members now with access to affordable hygienic sanitation and over 250 employees, 60% of whom live in the communities they serve. The hope is that the Sanergy model will compel governments looking to invest in cost-efficient models to solve the sanitation crisis and provide safe sanitation solutions for their residents.
