Food for Education is a social enterprise in Kenya that uses technology, smart operations, and logistics to deliver low-cost, nutritious meals, targeting Africa’s 250 million urban and peri-urban low income, public school students. They provide subsidised nutritious meals to primary school children to improve nutrition education outcomes. By sourcing food from local smallholder farmers, and utilising a model which prioritises efficient supply chain management and production, Food for Education lowers the cost of school meals. Parents contribute to these affordable and nutritious meals through a mobile money system linked to NFC wristbands, which their children wear and ‘Tap2Eat’ in under 5 seconds to access their lunch. To date, Food for Education has served over 6,000,000 meals and is scaling to serve 72,000,000 meals in the next two years. Their goal is to reach 1,000,000 public school students by 2025.
Food for Education has been recognised through the University of South Australia Alumni Award, Builders of Africa Award 2018, Top 40 under 40 in Kenya, Rainer Arnhold Fellowship, Global Citizen Youth Leadership Prize 2018 presented by Cisco, the United Nations’ Deputy Secretary-General, the World Bank and the World Economic Forum.
