FirstWave Group (FirstWave) is Africa's leading aquaculture firm. Their vision is to provide an abundant supply of affordable protein to the growing African markets, sustainably. They have built and operate a vertically-integrated group of companies across the production, distribution and retail of fish and aquafeed in Southern and Eastern Africa. With headquarters in Amsterdam and Johannesburg, they have 1,000+ dedicated team-members across Zambia, Uganda, Kenya, South Africa and Europe, with plans to expand further across the continent. 


FirstWave sustainably produces tilapia fish in the pristine open waters of Lake Kariba and Lake Victoria, distributing over 35 million fish per year through 50+ of their own fishmonger retail stores, traditional markets and most major supermarkets. In partnership with Aller-Aqua Group A/S, they own and operate Sub-Saharan Africa’s largest and most modern aquafeed factory, producing a vegetable-based diet, with no-GMO and no antibiotics. Over 90% of their inputs are locally sourced, providing further job creation and supporting local industry. FirstWave view all stakeholders as an investment and this includes their employees! The team are seeking an innovative and trustworthy individual with a genuine passion for people and organisations to join their team as Head of Human Capital.


As the new Head of Human Capital, you will shape and influence FirstWave’s People agenda, working closely with, and reporting directly to, the Co-CEO. As such, you will play a key role in contributing to the organisation’s growth and success over the next 3-5 years. You will advise the Group leadership team and build the frameworks to develop and sustain a positive, organisational culture and employee experience, as the organisation scales. You will be required to work closely with all operational teams throughout the organisation - developing relationships and partnering with team leaders to translate business priorities within each function, into Human Capital activities which can be implemented by Human Capital Operations, to shape and influence FirstWave’s People Agenda. You will be required to work proactively and consistently with operations leaders and line managers to drive Human Capital strategy and ensure that this is delivered fairly and at a consistently high standard.

Key Responsibilities

People, Performance & Culture Management

  • Lead the team members that support strategic goal setting to build people capability and capacity throughout the organisation, by ensuring that all staff are onboarded, trained and developed to deliver on the relevant targets
  • Strategize with the leadership team to drive a culture of continuous improvement
  • Own all aspects of the employee lifecycle
  • Assess and improve upon organizational communication channels from a company-wide level to manager / employee and peer-to-peer relations
  • Lead on allocated strategic projects e.g. the review of performance management, the culture change project, leadership and management development
  • Work in collaboration with Business Partners to ensure talent mapping occurs and results in the creation of a leadership pipeline as well as supporting the sourcing of key posts via internal mobility - staff attraction and retention
  • Identify areas requiring a change in strategy throughout the organisation and work with leaders to agree an effective change management approach and implementation plan. Lead and facilitate change as required.
  • Ensure that there is a sustainable approach to identifying and facilitating the development, deployment and engagement of a talent management system, in line with the people management strategy, with the ultimate aim of attracting and retaining talent, and ensuring a positive employee experience

 

Strategic Business Partnering

  • Partner with and provide strategic and insightful Human Capital expertise to business leaders on all people-related subjects
  • Act as the primary HC contact for the respective operations
  • Coach and develop senior leaders on a number of HC business-wide initiatives, including cultural change programmes and engagement strategies
  • Assess, evaluate and develop the right skills in the right places across the business, facilitating strategies to fill gaps where needed
  • Evaluate and build business capability by facilitating talent management, succession and resource planning
  • Adopt a highly strategic and proactive role (e.g. partnering the business to outline organizational objectives) instead of an operational role
  • Champion and implement the people strategy within the operation and ensure business strategies align, challenging as required to drive change
  • Input into the business strategy and organisation design to ensure that structures, roles and responsibilities enable delivery         

 

Information Provision and Business Advice

  • Provide specialist guidance on the interpretation and application of policies and procedures, resolving queries and issues and referring very complex or contentious issues to others
  • Lead relevant HC related projects in the respective operation working with members of the wider HC team (e.g. operations roll out of a new policy or process)
  • Inspire business leaders within the operation to deliver HC transformation of their area, aligning ways of working to create a high-performance people culture
  • Partner with, consult with and influence the line management on people needs to enable delivery of business targets

 

Employee Relations Case Management

  • Investigate, and propose solutions for, complex ER cases in liaison with line managers; coordinate the organization's response to legal cases brought by individuals
  • Support managers at Disciplinary Enquiries

 

Governance and Risk

  • Input into business operations risk, through continuous internal and external monitoring of business impact, as well as changes in stakeholder needs
  • Provide feedback to the relevant stakeholders within Group HC to initiate improvement projects that will increase profits or protect against risks in the function
  • Establish and maintain the highest ethical standard in employment practices, including compliance with all statutory requirements.
  • Engage line management to advocate and demonstrate compliance with HC policy and champion interventions

Criteria

Requirements

  • Minimum education level - Tertiary qualification (Bachelors, Postgraduate, MBA or similar from a reputable educational organisation)
  • 5+ years’ experience in a similar role
  • Strategy consulting or corporate experience is a plus
  • Experience in HR administration,management and implementation of HR processes, is a plus
  • Demonstrable passion for HR, People and Organisational Development
  • Knowledge of relevant key texts such as Powerful by Patty McCord, The Culture Code by Daniel Coyle and similar are required
  • Experience working within a startup environment - agile with an ability to strategise and execute
  • Experience of supervising and directing people (at all levels) and other resources to achieve specific end results within limited timeframes (13 months to 2 years)
  • Experience strategizing and developing frameworks to achieve leadership and organisational objectives
  • Strong people skills with an ability to build relationships with teams in a variety of locations - local and remote
  • Problem solver with an ability to visualise and develop solutions and then iterate to refine

Location: Johannesburg preferred, open to remote candidates based in Africa and within a similar timezone +/- 2 hours max difference
