Factor[e] Ventures is seeking a Technical Analyst with experience in Water, Sanitation and Hygiene to join our global team. The Technical Analyst will support our global team to further investments, research, and development of novel water, sanitation and/or built-environment solutions or start-ups. The Technical Analyst will work to further Factor[e]’s mission to improve lives in the developing world through increased access to sustainable energy and related services. He/she will conduct technical due diligence on early-stage tech-enabled companies, support related Factor[e] projects through rigorous technical and economic assessments, coordinate and project manage related research projects, and generally support Factor[e] Associates and Principals. 


This position will be primarily a remote-work position, but the applicant will be expected to be available and present for meetings within normal business hours within Mountain Standard Time (GMT-7). The successful candidate will have a strong technology background and solid academic qualifications in a relevant engineering or scientific field. In addition, candidates with start-up experience are preferred. Relevant work in impact investing and/or experience in Africa, India or Latin America is a plus. Most importantly, candidates must demonstrate a commitment to social enterprise and sustainable development. As COVID restrictions permit, the Technical Analyst position is expected to require 10-15% travel to other emerging markets and the United States for evaluation of venture opportunities, venture support, conducting project work, and working in-person with Factor[e] global team members.



Roles and Responsibilities

  • Support deal sourcing, supporting technical due diligence, and presentation of deals within Factor[e]’s investment process
  • Support thesis/thought leadership work in one or more of our focus areas: waste and resource management, the built environment, and integrated systems, helping to inform our global team and partners about specific challenges and opportunities
  • Manage projects and internally incubated companies related to sanitation, waste and resource management, and/or the built environment, which includes being responsible for internal and external deliverables, developing methods to assess the viability of proposed technology solutions, and liaising with sub-contractors or third parties. Example activities include: 
  • Create techno-economic analyses in partnership with an Entrepreneur-in-Residence in Kenya to assess feasibility of integrating water/sanitation utilities to the built environment
  • Building requirements for a software financing platform specifically for funding water projects, creating technical checks on system designs, and liaising with potential funders to gather requirements for the platform
  • Build on-going relationships with partners within the sanitation sector
  • Bring knowledge of relevant and novel technologies to Factor[e] investment team to be refreshed and updated to reflect current industry trends


Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum Bachelor’s Degree in Chemical or Civil Engineering 
  • Professional or academic experience in wastewater treatment, municipal drinking water, or decentralized sanitation solutions
  • Ability to build and maintain strong working relationships with a variety of stakeholders, including the global Factor[e] team, external partners, and other collaborators
  • Comfortable switching between working autonomously and in groups depending on the task
  • Positive, encouraging, collaborative attitude 
  • Strong interest and alignment with Factor[e]’s mission along with an ability to articulate a unique perspective on how technology innovation and scalable enterprise can drive development
  • Eagerness to spend time in the field in the developing economies to build an understanding of how a technology or business can impact customers and end-users.
  • Ability to prioritize and complete multiple tasks efficiently, without sacrificing work quality
  • Demonstrated skill in techno-economic modeling 
  • Current and deep technical understanding in current field of study
  • Strong written and verbal English and strong presentation skills

Desired Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of direct experience working with or in startup companies
  • 3-5 years industry experience
  • Experience working in emerging markets and demonstrated ability to deliver results in enterprise-driven solutions to poverty
  • Demonstrated ability to bring technology to market
