EIDU is a social impact business with an ambitious vision to educate the world’s poorest 1 billion children via their next generation global edtech learning platform. EIDU has built a learning platform which works on mobile devices providing access to education for young children in poor areas where it’s hard to get the high-quality education that all children deserve.

Our vision is to improve education for these children by building the next-generation global ed-tech platform. We believe that all children should be given the chance to reach their full intellectual potential. However, more than 600 million children in the world do not even learn foundational skills like reading and basic math, despite the majority of them going to school. Our Android-based solution enables them to learn by themselves and provides teachers with high-quality teaching support. It works globally, even on the cheapest smartphones and tablets.

How we work:

  • A free culture, emphasizing autonomy, flexibility, and agility using Scrum.
  • We build highly available, low-maintenance, high-quality applications by applying DevOps and focusing on writing Clean Code.
  • Current technologies:
  • App: Android, Kotlin
  • Backend: serverless, Kotlin, AWS, Terraform, FaunaDB, Redshift
  • Web: Vue.js

Role Responsibilities:

  • As a member of our Scrum team, so far consisting of Berlin-based senior engineers, develop features for our Android apps and back-end systems
  • Together with the engineering team, build highly scalable and reliable system architectures.
  • You will be our first - of hopefully many - software engineers in Nairobi, so it will be up to you to grow and mentor our nascent Nairobi engineering team
  • Since you’ll be much closer to our users than the Berlin team is, you will likely visit them regularly in order to get clarity on requirements and diagnose issues

What you should bring:

  • A minimum of 10 years of recent experience in writing code and designing system architectures or alternatively, at least 5 years of full-stack experience involving Android, Kotlin, and AWS
  • A proven record of developing production-grade software in a team
  • A passion for writing clean, maintainable, functional and testable code
  • Full-stack experience is a plus
  • Experience with our tech stack, or with mobile app or game development is not required; we care about your advanced software engineering skills rather than what technologies you have used!

  • An international team of passionate people located in Berlin, Nairobi and Lagos, who support and challenge each other to achieve the great goal we set out for
  • We focus on results, not time spent at the office, so there is a high degree of flexibility regarding working hours, vacations, and the place of your work
  • Social impact like no one else

About EIDU

EIDU’s primary goal is to achieve social impact. They see early childhood education as a key factor in reducing the global opportunity gap. The ability to use mobile technology to improve educational conditions worldwide is in reach – at a fraction of the cost of other alternatives. In a few years, smartphones will be ubiquitous even in the least developed regions of the world. EIDU believe there is immense potential in harnessing smartphones as a teaching tool – it all depends on the software, and they are creating an app-based learning environment that enables children aged 3-6 to develop cognitive abilities on their own.

EIDU chose to approach their mission by founding a technology startup and are confident that their business model will allow them to develop a highly competitive product, as well as to attract the most talented people in the field. Despite their strong focus on technology and economy, the convictions that drive them are deeply humanistic, not technocratic. An innovative equity model reflects their focus on impact: rather than benefiting the first generation of founders only, it is designed to drive purposeful entrepreneurship for all employees over the course of a full decade.

Behind EIDU is a team with a decade-long common history of building and marketing highly innovative and successful software products. They want EIDU to be a place for growth, supporting people to make the best out of their talents. Employing agile principles on all levels, their organisational culture empowers people to act and make decisions autonomously within their domains. Simple and effective processes remove obstacles that hinder people from getting their jobs done, as well as involve them in shaping the organisation.

EIDU is headquartered in Berlin, Germany, with employees from over 8 different countries. Team members are also based in Nairobi, Kenya and Mexico City.
