Educate!, a high-growth and award-winning non-profit social enterprise, tackles youth unemployment by partnering with youth, schools and governments to design and deliver solutions that equip young people in Africa with the skills to attain further education, overcome gender inequities, start businesses, get jobs, and drive development in their communities. Our goal is to design skills-based, post-primary education and employment solutions which impact youth life outcomes sustainably and at scale. Educate! is a team of over 160 largely African staff and 300 volunteer youth mentors. We have been backed by top foundations and product leaders such as Imaginable Futures, Big Bang Philanthropy, Echoing Green, the 1st Google Employee’s foundation, the head of Google Search and Rippleworks Foundation. Educate! won a 2018 Klaus J. Jacobs Prize and a 2015 WISE Award, and has been highlighted by Bill Gates, in the World Bank’s S4YE's Impact Portfolio, an Al Jazeera documentary, BBC, and The Brookings Institution as one of 14 case studies in their global scaling education learning initiative. Educate! was also selected by the UN’s Generation Unlimited as 1 of 20 innovative youth solutions and by the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation as a Goalkeepers Accelerator.

 

Educate! is growing fast and we have much more to achieve! As such, we are seeking a senior strategic leader to oversee our Africa Operations - a portfolio of six programs across three countries, including the establishment of new country operations. In this role, you will be at the center of the organization, working closely with our country leadership teams to 1) build the systems needed to scale early-stage products, 2) effectively operate and grow later-stage scaled products, and 3) establish new country operations as the organization expands into new countries. This role will also work in partnership with our COO to develop organizational processes and systems to ensure our top leaders are setting and driving our medium to long-term strategy and collaborating effectively across geographic, programmatic, and functional domains. The Deputy COO is an excellent systems builder, coach, strategic thinker, and collaborator.

 

As the ideal candidate for this role, you will be a driven, strategic, creative problem-solver who is motivated by removing obstacles to help teams design and scale high-impact solutions. You will also bring significant leadership, management, and operational experience.

 

 

Role Responsibilities: 
 

  • Building Systems for Scale:

At Educate!, our Program Directors and Country Directors are responsible for developing program management and field operations that can scale programs from impacting 200 youth to programs that can impact 20,000 youth annually. The Deputy COO will work in partnership with country leadership teams to create the strategies, systems and back-end processes for scale. This will include:

  • Establishing principles and ‘best practices’ for building scale systems
  • Advising Program Directors and Country Directors on their program management and field operation systems
  • Solving cross-cutting scale challenges for the organization, such as youth recruitment and data integrity at scale 
  • Developing the organization’s capability to scale products while maintaining impact

 

  • Coaching Country Leaders: 

The Deputy COO will directly manage our Country Leadership teams. In this role, the Deputy COO will help Country Directors manage complex operations with products in various growth stages. The Deputy COO will help develop our team’s capacity to:

  • Build high performing team with minimal organizational politics
  • Manage competing priorities 
  • Identify and elevate strategic risks
  • Drive alignment 
  • Communicate effectively internally and externally
  • Develop a strong pipeline of leaders
  • Build organizational systems and process

 

  • Operational Oversight: 

The Deputy COO will manage our Africa Operations, which includes Rwanda, Uganda, Kenya and the establishment of new country operations as Educate! expands.  The focus of this work will be:

  • Manage teams to goals and stay up to date on progress towards goals; unlock support for the country's leadership team to ensure they can reach their goals.
  • Manage teams to strategy: check team plans and understanding against org-wide strategy; identify areas of strategic misalignment and facilitate the process of resolution
  • Identifies and shares risks with COO and CEO: When notices issues of dysfunction or greater risk to achieving the country’s broad objectives, these issues are brought to the COO and CEO for greater organizational risk management
  • Financial Oversight: Approve additional budget requests for country operations. Ensure country directors submit budgets on time. Ensure budgets are in line with the country’s cost model and funding strategy
  • People, Performance, and Culture: Support country leadership teams to ensure the right skills are in place to meet goals, roles are designed well and filled appropriately, succession plans are in place, and that there is a culture of high performance and team connection

 

  • Matrix Coordination: 

Educate! operates across a three-dimensional matrix that includes product leaders, functional leaders, and country leaders. In this role, you will collaborate with our COO to ensure that the three dimensions of our matrixed organization work smoothly together and each add value in the right places. Projects and/or responsibilities are likely to include:

  • Integrating functional priorities into country priorities: Ensuring country goals reflect functional priorities, helping functional directors resolve issues of poor performance in certain departments, staffing challenges, cross-departmental coordination challenges
  • Raising important issues to functional directors: Sharing relevant areas of need with functional directors to ensure appropriate support is given
  • Identifying where greater training or new processes are needed to support collaboration across the matrix, and collaborating with the COO to develop training or processes for this

Criteria

  • Minimum of a Bachelor’s degree with 8+ years of work experience
  • Proven to be a highly organized operator
  • Ability to work well with executives, and able to lead and influence across multiple levels and functions of an organization
  • Strong orientation to team culture and cross-functionality

About Educate!

What if there was a way to measurably change the trajectory of the lives of youth across Africa?

 

Since its launch in 2009, Educate! has worked to do just this, delivering outsized impacts at scale and at disproportionately low cost, through a product-led approach to youth development. As a disruptive, not-for-profit, social enterprise, our team leverages an obsession with evidence and entrepreneurial drive to tackle one our planet's greatest challenges - unlocking the potential of its youngest continent. Educate!’s core model combines training in key skills with access to practical experience starting a business and mentorship, a formula that has been validated by several independent evaluations. This model is distributed through products targeting two lead channels. First, Educate! works with governments to help reform education systems at scale through policy change, teacher behavior change and tech-enabled products targeting systems-level sustainability, while also working directly with select schools. Second, Educate! builds employment-focused bootcamps and business support services targeting out-of-school youth left out of the education system.
