BURN Manufacturing designs, manufactures and distributes East Africa’s best-selling, most durable and economical charcoal and wood cookstoves. BURN’s aspirational, fuel-efficient cooking products save lives and forests in the developing world. Not only is BURN the leading cookstove company in Africa, it is the only cookstove company which manufactures all of its products in sub-Saharan Africa’s only state of-the-art, clean cookstove manufacturing facility. BURN has revolutionised the global cookstove sector by proving the business case for selling high quality, locally manufactured, unsubsidised cookstoves. Since 2013, BURN has sold 650,000+ Jikokoa ™ stoves in East Africa - helping 3,000,000 beneficiaries save $215 million in fuel expenditure and 2.6 million tons of wood, while reducing indoor air pollution by 65%.  BURN sells up to 25,000 stoves per month and the team are on track to double their sales over the next 12 months, as they expand their successful model across the continent. BURN is poised to bring its revolutionary biomass cookstoves, as well as, a new range of electric, hybrid and liquid fuel stoves to Sub-Saharan Africa and beyond; entering 6 new countries and launching 5 new products, over the next three years.  The team are seeking an experienced Engineer and leader to help them achieve these ambitious growth objectives.

 

As the new Director of Engineering, you will lead the design and development of new products and launch of the production processes required to ensure BURN’s new products are ready to go to market. With overall responsibility for all activities required to bring new products through the the product development process and launch products into the factory, you will lead a variety of tasks including design, testing, engineering, process development, and the development / launch of new production lines. You will need to be based in Ruiru (just outside Nairobi), Kenya.  BURN will provide support to successful candidates who require a work permit.

 

Role Responsibilities:

 

  • Overall responsibility for launching new products in the factory, including timelines, budgets, and risk analysis in addition to technical aspects
  • Manage the detailed design of new products, including process development, equipment selection, design for manufacturability, durability testing, material selection, etc.
  • Design and produce production, assembly and QC tooling, as well as custom factory equipment
  • Oversee initial production of new products
  • Manage a team of engineers, testing lab employees and workshop employees.
  • Work closely with designers, the market research team, factory management and the quality control team
  • Develop SOP’s, WI, specs, tolerances, QA processes and procedures
  • Create and adhere to budgets and timelines
  • Support the factory, including including troubleshooting, root cause analysis, equipment startup and continuous improvement

Criteria

The ideal candidate must:

  • Have launched at least 1 production line, ideally for sheet metal 
  • Have developed and launched at least 1 consumer product
  • Must demonstrate experience in sheet metal punching and forming
  • Possess general machine shop knowledge, including CNC equipment
  • Demonstrate experience in Jig and fixture design
  • Possess experience with tool/die or moulds
  • Posssess working knowledge of materials, specifically metals and plastics
  • Demonstrate basic knowledge and troubleshooting of mechanical, electrical and hydraulic systems
